Loud Blasts and Smoke Witnessed in Central Tehran
As per on-the-ground reports, two loud blasts were audible in Tehran on Saturday morning. Simultaneously, columns of dense smoke were seen billowing over central and eastern districts of the city.
“The nature of these blasts suggests that this is a strike involving missiles,” one news agency stated, without immediately provide further details.
Background: Escalating Strains and Recent Developments
This event takes place against a backdrop of severely escalated strains in the region. Major developments preceding this strike involve:
- US Military Buildup: A massive buildup of US naval forces in the Middle East, featuring the repositioning of carrier strike groups.
- Nuclear Talks: Latest discussions between the US and Iran on Tehran's nuclear programme ended inconclusively, with suggestions of more talks scheduled.
- Official Rhetoric: Before the strike, a prominent American figure had labeled Iran as “the leading state sponsor of terrorism” and issued threats regarding its missile program.
- Ultimatum: Reportedly, a time limit of 10 to 15 days had been given to Iran to settle the nuclear dispute or face serious repercussions.
Iranian Response
In response to prior accusations, Iranian authorities had accused the United States of spreading “falsehoods” about its missiles programme. Officials rejected assertions about weapons development and protest deaths as unfounded.
