Wimbledon Introduces Video Challenge Technology for the First Time.

Wimbledon court with video review system

Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in employing video review systems.

Replay systems will make its debut at Wimbledon this year.

Competitors will gain the ability to question specific rulings from the official, following the practice currently in place at each of the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

This innovation will be accessible on Centre Court and the number one court for the duration of the Championships and on the other four show courts when they are staging singles contests.

This step arrives only a year after the AELTC rolled out ELC, which effectively ended the centuries-old role of line judges.

Scope of Challenges

Competitors will not be permitted to dispute the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can request the official to review other situations, such as:

  • If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • If a shot touched an opponent's racquet or person during play.
  • Potential interference at the conclusion of a rally.

Importantly, there will be no limit on the number of reviews a player can request.

Case in Point

An illustrative case took place in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against Jack Draper.

Draper admitted it was a tough situation for the umpire, but believed his opponent had "played the rules quite well."

The umpire watched a replay and determined Draper was responsible for hindrance, granting the rally to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

Video reviews are not exclusive to major tournaments. The system has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour plans to have video reviews implemented at all of its events.

Additional Innovations

Another change at The Championships this year will be the introduction of visual indicators on scoreboards to support the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This solves situations where the crowd have sometimes been uncertain if a shot was in or out.

Finally, with exactly 100 days remaining until the beginning of the tournament, organizers have further revealed an increase in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
